On (kind of) the same subject as my last post, is it just me that finds the whole Harry Potter circus rather depressing? While I’m sure the books are very good (from what I can tell, I’m the only person in the world, child or adult, not to have read one) can it be a good thing that such an excess of attention is focussed in one direction? There’s a whole world of literature out there.

I myself started reading Arabian Nights, just wish I had time to read more of it.
You can download it for free at manybooks.net
All legal, such a great website.

As I have many fandom friends, I keep it fairly quiet, but I’ve never read one either. I’ve glanced at them, but never read more than a couple of chapters.
Currently reading Mark Haddon’s new novel. -
That looks good, thanks. The audio equivalent (i.e. ‘talking books’) is Librivox. I use that to keep me amused on the motorway sometimes.

The heavy hardback editions are the best. They hurt more when you grab them off people on trains and use them to beat the idiot severely round the head whilst shouting “Read a fucking grown-up book you thick bastard!”

It might not be very fashionable, what with all this alleged global warming, climate change, or whatever we’re meant to call it this week, but I make every effort not to travel on trains – in fact the last time was last September. On that occasion, I did 8 trains in one day, so that must surely be my quota for a good few years yet.
Nonetheless, I’m sure there will be a next time, and rest assured I will remember that procedure and apply it if the opportunity arises.
