Bad Vista

People keep asking me what’s wrong with it. The answer is usually “how long have you got?” It’s not just that it’s pointless, slow, wasteful and just plain rubbish. It’s much worse.

Here is a more complete answer, if you’re interested. If I’ve directed you to this particular blog entry (and let’s face it, why else would you be here?), it means I don’t want you to ask me about it again until you’ve followed that link and read it. ;)

I’ll try not to make this a rant.

I have been using Ubuntu exclusively on my laptop and PC for 8 months now. Both systems are dual boot and both have suffered failures. On my laptop it wasn’t Windows fault.

My Desktop was copying files in XP when all of a sudden it froze and blue screened and then when it rebooted.. “no operating system found”. Uhhh.. (no ram problems, no hard drive problems)

Luckily after trying a few times it stopped saying that and I was able to boot up Ubuntu just fine but Windows XP needs the Master Boot record fixed.

My Laptop has some problem which is probably to do with the hard drive heat (can’t really fix that problem being in a hot country). XP won’t boot and says in needs to be reinstalled.

My point to all this is why is my most essential piece of software so easily broken when alternatives don’t? Why should Windows be so hard to recover from?

So my Laptop had a hard drive problems and the upgrade program in Ubuntu stopped working so what did I do? Reinstall the OS? I just reinstalled the update program. Now it works.

In a Windows operating system normally the only recovery solution is to reinstall and lose any data you had.

Its taken me so time to learn how to use Ubuntu well (8 months) but in that time I have learned so much and it is very refreshing to have so much control of your system from the command line all the way up to GUI tools.

    rant out,
    Andrew Fenn
